While the Shire has a strong background in heritage and agriculture, the area is emerging as an employment base with a trend towards mining. The development of Blayney as a Cold Store Warehouse centre is gaining momentum, coupled with the road rail intermodal terminal. The Cadia and Ridgeway Gold/Copper mines also bringing wealth and jobs with the outlook for further mining development looking bright.
INDUSTRIAL INFORMATION
Council has adopted a positive role in promoting other avenues for industrial development and employment.
The following schedule gives an overview of the major industries in the Shire and the extraordinary range of products from the Shire.
- Western White Linen, a commercial laundry service for the region also travelling to the Blue Mountains and western Sydney, daily. Staff level approximately 40.
- Friskies Pet Care (a division of Nestle) is the Australian manufacturing base for pet food for domestic and international markets. Friskies employs approximately 380.
- Blayney Foods, the only major cold storage warehousing outside of the Sydney region- with links to Simplot and Banter Stuggles. Employs 20. and has a current capacity of 20,000 pallets with plans to expand freezer storage.
- Bathurst Treated Pine Pty Ltd produces CCA treated round and sawn timber for the domestic and Japanese markets.
- Australian Queen Bee Exporters collects and processes honey for export. Also exports queen bees to severe climate countries in the northern hemisphere.
- FCL Pty Ltd. Intermodal Transport Terminal with a large dedicated train to Port Botany daily. Includes a pick up and delivery service of containers to meet customer shipping schedules.
- ICR Engineering steel fabricators and erectors of large buildings. Also manufacture truck bodies.
- An emerging vineyard industry ranging from a number of small specialist vineyards developed to a 200 hectare vineyard with a large variety of red and white grapes.
- A very strong gold and copper mining industry producing 550 000 oz of gold by 2002 and which will expand over the next twenty years as exploration proves up new resources.
- A strong road transport industry.
- Blayney Galvanisers, a division of J Furphy and Sons, a heavy engineering firm from Shepparton, has a galvanising plant to service the western regions of New South Wales and has been involved in export.
- Prevision Pty Ltd is a machine tools and fabrication plant.
- Procart Pty Ltd has a range of mobile cranes to 100 tonnes lifting capacity.
- Mid West Engineering manufactures precast concrete products.
Other manufacturing and service industries will continue to provide growth in the Shire.
- Both Pioneer and Mid West Concrete have premixed concrete plants in town.
INDUSTRIAL LAND
Council has extensive reserves of serviced industrial land on the northern side of the town. The land has frontage to the Mid Western Highway and is in close proximity to the Blayney Intermodal Freight Terminal. The land being offered is fully serviced with water, natural gas, electricity and telephone with the site being connected to sewer.
The Department of State and Regional Development has indicated government support may be available towards infrastructure cost (eg the supply of electricity).
TRANSPORTATION
Road
Blayney sits on the Mid Western Highway giving direct access to Sydney to the east and Melbourne and Adelaide to the south. There is a direct link to the west to pick up the Great Western Highway through Orange and Dubbo to Western Australia.
Rail
FCL Interstate Transport Services Pty Ltd operates the Blayney Intermodal Terminal at the Blayney railway yard.
Transport
There are a number of road transport operators in Blayney, including Nixon's Transport, who have a large fleet of trailers for dry and refrigerated transport. Nixon's have a daily service to Sydney and Melbourne.
SUPPORT SERVICES
Weighbridge
Weighbridge facilities are available at a nearby development. The weighbridge is an RTA registered bridge and currently weighs B-Doubles and semi trailers.
Labour
It is possible to draw on the labour pool of Orange and Bathurst, both cities only a half hour's drive away. For new employees wishing to establish, Council can arrange house land packages in conjunction with a building developer, including very competitive funding packages.
