Does my dog or cat need to be microchipped and/or registered?

Under NSW Companion Animal Legislation all dogs and cats (with the exception of working dogs) are to be microchipped and registered for life. Assistance dogs are registered free, however must be microchipped.

Companion Animal registrations are for the lifetime of your pet and, therefore, fees do not need to be paid annually under the system. If your animal is sold or given away to a new owner, Council should be informated so changes can be made to the animal's details. Council also places your animal's information on the state wide Companion Animal Register. Registration Costs:

  • De-sexed animal is $40.00
  • De-sexed animal owned by eligible pensioner $15.00 Note: No pension discount is given if the animal is not de-sexed
  • Animal not de-sexed $150.00
  • Registered Breeder with Canine Society Non De-sexed $40.00
  • Working dogs are not required to be registered or microchipped but should have a collar with an identification tag. However, if any dog is caught wandering or causing problems, it will have to be microchipped and registered prior to being released from the pound.
Microchipping is usually performed at veterinary clinics where costs may vary. At the time of registration, the following documents should be provided to Council:
  • Verification of the microchip number.
  • Verification of sterilisation by a Vet if the animal has been de-sexed.
  • Pension Card if claiming a pension discount.
  • Canine Association registration card, if animal is used for the purposes of breeding.
